Lost Your Dog?
Go to Town Lake Animal Shelter.  Stray dogs are given 72 hours before the are assessed for adoption, rescue or euthanasia. Go and look every day. Make sure you fill out a lost dog card in case someone thinks they have found your dog.

Post fliers around your neighborhood and in local Veterinarian offices.   Describe the dog and see if they recognize the dog from your description. Sometimes they will, and in one phone call, the owner might be at your door.

Place a free Lost  Dog ad.  Place an ad in the Austin American Statesman Lost and Found section. A three day Lost  Dog ad is free. You can also place a notice on Austin360.com pets and search their lost/found pets section. www.austinlostpets.com is a free service for listing and locating lost pets in the Austin area.

Post a notice on the No Kill handbill. This email newsletter is run buy Austin Pets Alive! Check their site for instructions on posting notices.

Protect Your Pet
1. Get your dog microchipped. You can get this done at most veterinarian offices. Unlike a collar and tag, a microchip cannot be lost. All research labs scan for a microchip so if you're dog is ever stolen and sold to a research lab (yes, this does happen) you can  be assured it will be returned to you. Every shelter scans incoming dogs for microchips. You can't believe how excited they get when a dog is brought in with no tags and the microchip scanner starts beeping.

2. Register your dog with the city. It's a City of Austin Ordinance, but there are lots of good reasons to register your pet. Any dog that is brought to TLAC with a current city tag gets the Red Carpet Return home treatment. That's worth the price ($5 for spayed/neutered animals).

3. Get some training. (For the dog too.)  90% of the dogs that end up at kill shelters don't have any training, neither do their owners. Training your dog practically guarantees that your dog won't end up in a kill shelter. If you also get your dog microchipped, you can be pretty sure that he/she will always come home.
