What You Can Do

Sure your dog is sweet, but do you really think the world needs 67,000 other dogs just like him?

  • Learn the facts about spay/neuter and get your dog fixed. Tell your family, friends, neighbors why they need to get their pet fixed too.
  • Donate money to local organizations so they can continue to help stop pet overpopulation. Check out the  Animal Trustees of Austin and  Emancipet Mobile spay/neuter clinic.
  • Help a lost pet find it's way home and stay out of the shelter. Here are some ways to help a lost pet and to make sure your pet doesn't get lost.
  • Keep your pet.
  • Get your dog to obedience classes. 90% of the dogs left by their owners in kill shelters have never had obedience training.
  • Make sure your pet is up to date on shots and wearing a current city tag and identification tag.  For low cost shots and health check visit the Animal Trustees of Austin wellness clinic.
  • Getting a new pet? Look for a great pet at a local rescue organization or shelter. In 2004, over 20,000 dogs and cats of all sizes and breeds were brought to the Austin Animal shelter. Thanks to rescue volunteers, 43% of these animals found new homes. Below are some rescue organizations in the Austin area.
